Barone's Famous Italian Restaurant
Valley Glen
Price Range:
- Under $30
Hours:
L Mon.-Fri., D nightly
Food Type:
Italian
Review:
When you are the first restaurant to offer pizza in Southern California, and generation after generation of customers keep coming back for that pizza-- as well as other Italian specialties--you must be doing something just right. For four generations, the Monteleone family has been welcoming diners to enjoy their freshly made pizza, lasagna and cannelloni. The restaurant, now managed by Tom Monteleone from Monteleone's West, is located in the historic building that once housed Hoppe's Old Heidelberg and Matterhorn Chef. It's a cozy retreat, offering comfortable retro red vinyl booths and a popular piano bar. Name your favorite Italian dish, and it can be found here. The pizza--hot, crispy, cheesy and rectangular-- just keeps getting better with every bite. Not to be overlooked are equally gratifying dishes, such as the famous Stuffed Mushrooms. Picture jumbo mushrooms brimming with lobster, shrimp and crabmeat and topped with cheddar cheese and bearnaise sauce. It's absolutely irresistible. Certified premium choice steaks are aged for 21 days, and fresh seafood and Eastern cornfed baby back ribs also highlight the menu. Fresh Veggie Raviolis are an alternative for carb watchers, but the Appetizer Combo with baby back ribs, buffalo chicken wings, fried zucchini and garlic toast presents a serious temptation. Salads, which can be chopped upon request, include an Antipasto, Caesar and Sorrento Salad with baby mixed greens, buffalo mozzarella, asparagus and caramelized walnuts. Other selections include sandwiches (Italian Sausage, anyone?) and six kinds of pasta with a variety of sauces. Veal lovers will be delighted with the extensive menu selection. Among the choices are Veal Scaloppini Marsala, Parmigiana, Milanese and Piccata. Dinners include a choice of soup or salad, fresh vegetable, pasta or baked potato. Another specialty of the house is your choice of breast of chicken or shrimp with fresh eggplant, roasted bell peppers, olive oil and Romano cheese. Could it get any better? Why certainly; cheese ravioli accompanies the dish. Families are made to feel welcome at Barones. For younger family members, there's a children's menu that includes a choice of Spaghetti with Meat Sauce or Meatball; Half\Spaghetti and Half Cheese Ravioli with Meat Sauce or Meatball and Hamburger with Fries. And kids are certain to be happy with the drink and ice cream dessert that's included in their meal. The restaurant's piano bar features live entertainment, with many of the favorite performers from Monteleone's West. When planning your next party, celebration or meeting, give Barone's a call. The restaurant's Banquet room can accommodate up to 120 people. Lunch is served 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mon.-Fri. Dinner is served Mon. -Thurs. until 11 p.m.; Fri. & Sat. until midnight; Sun. until 9:30. Take-out orders are available.

Bistro Garden
Studio City
Price Range:
- Over $30
Hours:
L Mon.-Fri., D nightly
Food Type:
French
Review:

A year-round garden fantasy surrounds diners as they choose from a menu of French Continental specialties at The Bistro Garden. Greg and Carolyn Pappas’ acclaimed Studio City restaurant has been delighting diners for more than 17 years. The secret of their success is simple: high-quality ingredients, superior service and a decor that is nothing less than spectacular. The Atrium room is a horticultural haven abundant with flowers and ficus trees. A 30-foot-high trellis ceiling adds a regal touch to the room, while sunlight streams in from French windows and scores of skylights. Daytime dining is light and lovely; when the sun sets, thousands of twinkling lights transform the room into a sparkling winter wonderland.

The Bistro Garden’s menu is as tantalizing as its surroundings, with specialties that range from international favorites to American delights. At lunch, enjoy a mouthwatering Maryland Lump Meat Crab Cake or splurge on Osetra caviar. Then, sample the Greek Peasant salad or perhaps the Asian-Style Chicken or Marinated Swordfish salads. Dinner offers such palate-pleasing choices as Papparadelle with Lamb Ragu and Cremini Mushrooms, Seafood Linguini Arrabiata, Filet Mignon with Black Peppercorn Sauce and Grilled Prime NY Steak with herbed garlic butter. Don’t forget to save room for dessert. The Chocolate Souffle is irresistible; it’s served every day along with a seasonal souffle, such as Grand Marnier during the holidays and Pumpkin in October. Every evening, before or after dining, patrons are invited to settle into a stool at the mahogany bar and listen to live piano tunes. On Tuesdays, there’s also sax music, and on Fridays, enjoy the sounds of the string base, too.

Private parties can be arranged for the Atrium room, which has a capacity of 180, or at the equally enchanting Fireside room. With an outstanding 19th-century Scottish marble mantle, hand-painted floral murals and a dazzling crystal chandeliers, the Fireside room is ideal for celebrations, parties, weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs and corporate events. Groups of 20 to 70 can be served here, or a gathering of up to 125 can be accommodated at standing receptions. Offsite catering is available for parties and events with 20 to 350 people, and the Garden’s outstanding picnic baskets take outdoor dining to new heights.
